Features of the diagnosis and treatment department

The History of plastic surgery goes back a long way to 6 to 7 B.C. of India. There was a report about hinoplasty(Indian method) performed on people who had their nose been chipped off by Sushruta Samhita leading to the completion of “Ayurveda Susruta Samhita”. On the other hand, plastic surgery has a relatively short history in Japan, started by a special treatment unit of plastic surgery in the department of plastic surgery, Tokyo University Hospital in 1956. Gradually after that, each university hospital, national and public hospital and private hospital began establishing department of plastic surgery in their hospital, and finally in 1975, it gained medical specialty and recognition as ‘department of plastic surgery’. We provide treatment in a extremely wide area covering many different parts of the entire body. Considering that, we should say our real role in the department of plastic surgery, is to perform reconstruction operation on every parts of the body where diseases that have long been neglected, in order to regain their physical appearance as well as function.


Contents of medical cares

As it is named “plastic surgery” it is a branch of surgical medicine where we provide treatment for the morphological defect(disfigurement) caused on surface of the body. We bring it close to the normal condition, by mainly providing a surgical treatment.

Specifically, we deal with 1) burn injury 2) facial trauma(lacerated wound and fracture of facial bones) 3) “bruises” and “moles” existing at birth(excision and dermal implant) 4) benign skin tumor 5)skin cancer 6) head and neck cancer 7) chronic ulcer(bruises that heel poorly such as bedsores and mortification, caused by diabetic disease),8)repair of injuries(wrinkled/raised injuries), 9) congenital malformation of face and limbs, 10)treatment which use laser(removing hair and blemishes), 11)treatment of nails(ingrown toenail etc.).

In this department, as we provide treatment on an outpatient basis, patients need to choose surgery after considering how to adapt, even with diseases listed above. We may introduce our patients to a special hospital(University hospitals etc.) that can provide general treatment for them if the situation calls for it.

【Important reminders after undergoing the treatment】

We ask our patients to come back to the hospital for checkups according to their symptomatic states.
Second and third treatment are required(1 to 2 months after the first treatment) if the symptoms persist or worsen.
Please visit the department as soon as possible when the nail is brokren, the wire comes off , or when there is an acute pain.

What’s LASER treatment?

Generally, it is called Laser treatment in one ward, but do you know that there are various kinds of them?
Laser is a strong light with very narrow range of frequencies, it has specific wavelength(color). Light with narrow wavelength has specific colors it is absorbed into. For example, even if you expose a laser that absorbs green light(red thing) to red light it becomes reflected and nothing happens.
That is to say, things(therapeutic objective)that lasers can have an effect on differ according to its kind of lasers.
Now, Let’s focus on the main subject, Laser treatment. In our hospital we use a device called GentleMAX made in the USA by CANDELA corporation, it can generate 2 wavelengths called Alexandrite and Nd:YAG.

In addition to the fact that this device can be applied to a wide range of diseases by generating 2 wavelengths, it has a cooling system embedded inside, used for the irradiated site. By cooling the skin appropriately under a computer control, it can reduce the skin problems such as blister to a minimum.
